Title: The Semantic Web - An Introduction
Venue : Computer Society of India, Bangalore Chapter,
Talk Abstract : The Semantic Web is an emerging technology intended to transform 'documents' on the World Wide Web into 'knowledge' that can be processed by machines. While this is the vision of Tim Berners Lee, the core technologies of Semantic Web can be used in many enterprise applications today. RDF, RDFS and OWL - the building blocks of Semantic Web - provide good models for knowledge representation to solve some primary problems in data and application integration. The talk will give an introduction to semantic web, ontologies and associated W3C standards (RDF, OWL, SPARQL). It will also touch upon some existing and potential enterprise solutions that can use semantic web and the associated research opportunities. About the Speaker: Geetha Manjunath is a Senior Research Scientist at HP Labs, India with 17 years of research experience in System Software Design and Middleware Architectures. She joined Hewlett Packard in 1997 and has since then worked on research elements of Embedded Java Virtual Machine, System solutions around wireless access points, Grid Computing, Storage Virtualization and Sensor Middleware infrastructure. Before joining HP, she was at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Bangalore for 7 years - where she lead a research team to develop parallel compilers for distributed memory machines. Her broad areas of interests are in semantic web, programming environments and distributed computing. She holds a Masters degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Science. She was awarded the CSI Gold Medal from IISc in 1991 and the TR Shammanna Award for 1989 from Bangalore University. She also holds 4 US patents with more pending. Her current research focus is to explore use of ontologies within enterprise applications specifically for data integration, service composition and personalization. Her research contributions to semantic web community include a semantic and temporal view mechanism to provide access control to RDF and a generic data aggregation architecture using semantic web. She has also worked with Andy Seaborne (the creator of SPARQL, the W3C RDF query language) to come up with SPARQL Update Language (SPARUL) which is currently published for discussion by W3C.
