A declarative program describes what computation should be performed, without specifying how. Logic and functional programs are examples of declarative programming. However, most people have known declarative programming through domain specific languages such as SQL, Pig, Hive-QL, etc. This talk will survey past and ongoing work in declarative environments for data management and analytics, in academia as well as the industry.

Speaker Bio:

Prasan Roy is a Senior Researcher in the Information Management and Analytics group at IBM Research - India. Prior to IBM Research, he was with Aster Data Systems, a silicon valley based startup, where he was responsible for the overall architecture and development of Aster nCluster's parallel query optimization and planning component, as well as several innovative analytics operators. Earlier, he held faculty/research positions at IIT-Bombay and Bell Laboratories. Prasan holds a B.Tech. (1994) from IIT-Delhi and an M.Tech. (1998) and a Ph.D. (2001) from IIT-Bombay, all in computer science.
